PURPOSE OF THE CNO
The purpose of CNO is to work towards improving health of all people of the
Caribbean, by promoting improvement in the standards of nursing care, and by
advancing the educational, economic and professional welfare of all nurses.
CNO seeks to influence health and nursing policy regionally, and to empower
the National Nurses Associations in the Caribbean to work on behalf of nurses,
nursing and the peoples of the Caribbean. CNO aims to unite Caribbean nurses.
In light of the advent of the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME), Free
Trade Areas of the Americas (FTAA) the World trade Organization (WTO) and implications
of globalization, CNO seeks to ensure that an adequate quantity of well-trained,
skilled nurses are in the region to provide quality nursing care to the peoples
of the Caribbean.
This purpose shall be unrestricted by consideration of age, colour, creed,
gender, nationality, race, position or religion.
WHAT CNO OFFERS ITS MEMBERS
Facilitates visits to other areas of the region for observation, study tours
and exchange for nursing students.
Provided scholarships/ study grants for nurses through the Mavis Harney Foundation
Provides continuing education at Biennial and Regional conferences,
Provides Certificates of participation and continuing education credits to
participants on completion of conference programmes.
Recognizes the contributions of nurses and individuals to nursing practice,
service and to the organization. An award in recognition of these services is
provided through its awards programme. A Nurse of the year Award has been added
in recognition of The Year of the Caribbean Nurse Celebration. The CNO Hall
of fame Award will be re-instituted in the 50th year.
Promotes research projects and publication of results in the region.
Ensures follow-up on recommendations and resolutions made during biennial conferences.
Acts as a regional forum for student nurses through the Caribbean Student Nurses
Organization.
Provide leadership development training for nurse managers
Supports regional governments in the implementation of the CSME by educating
the nurses of the Caribbean and lobbying for equitable terms and conditions
of work as they move through the countries of the Caribbean.
